The Magpies won 4-0 against USG in the Champions League
Ahead of the very important game for Newcastle in the Champions League, the press were more interested in Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s quotes that he can only ‘congratulate those in Stuttgart for finding - I'll use quotation marks here - an idiot who paid that much money for Woltemade’. Coach Eddie Howe simply refused to get into that kind of talk and branded the toppic ‘irrelevant’ while German striker continued to score goals and added the third one in his fourth start for the Magpies tonight. It was crucial for Newcastle to win against tricky Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise since they lost their opening game against Barcelona and they did it courtesy of Woltemade and Anthony Gordon: USG – Newcastle 0-4.

The Magpies felt the absence of Alexander Isak who went to Liverpool and won only two games in all competitions this season, while USG were unbeaten in their last 10 games in all competitions, including a 3-1 win at PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League opener. But the Belgian side proved to be too inexperienced for this competition (yet) and surrendered two penalties which Gordon converted for an easy victory. Still, the home team plays nice, quick and attacking football and still produced some good opportunities against the English side. Considering the tough schedule for the Belgians (Inter, Bayern, Atletico, Marseille), this was their best chance to score at least one point.
For Newcastle it was all over after the first half, when the score was already 2-0. First goal happened in the 17th minute when Sandro Tonali did all the work and Woltemade just flicked his shot in the other direction for the lead. USG attacked between the first and second Newcastle’s goals and Pope was tested by Zorgane in the 25th minute. But USG’s Leysen made a clumsy tackle on Elanga in the 43rd minute, allowing Gordon to score from the spot. Ait El Hadj was the player who took most of the shots for the hosts and they were all dangerous, but just went over the bar. Niang and Zorgane both made Pope stretch in order to save his goal in the second half, but unlucky Leysen gave the visitors another penalty, this time by handballing in the 62nd minute. Gordon was on spot again and it was the end. Reserve player Harvey Barnes scored the last goal of the game in the 80th minute after an assist from Osula.
