Wolverhampton’s Portuguese stars mount a second-half comeback to condemn struggling Southampton to a 2-1 defeat, with Pedro Neto’s winner the pick of the lot

Portuguese stars kickstarted Wolverhampton Wanderers just in time to turn the game around at the south coast. They only won one game of their last ten in the league and for 45 minutes they seemed like they won’t be able to improve that record. The players in golden and black created no chances and were unable to stand up to their hosts. But the hosts aren’t actually renowned for grinding our results…

Southampton have been worryingly inconsistent of late. Their heavy defeat at the hands of Manchester United saw them ship nine goals and prompt many questions. Some encouraging displays were to follow, but the results were not satisfactory. Their boss Ralph Hasenhuttl suggested that their performances have been a lot better then what the results would indicate. And they certainly looked determined to prove the doubters wrong in the driving rain at St. Mary’s Stadium on Sunday. They looked full of running, they passed the ball well and allowed Wolves no time on the ball. Their opening goal was a marvellous volley from Danny Ings, who showed exquisite technique when he volleyed powerfully in from a left-hand side cross from Stuart Armstrong.

Nuno Espirito Santo must have said a few things that his Wolves needed to hear at the break. They went out for the second half looking like a different team and were ahead within 20 minutes with Saints suddenly looking second-best. Ryan Bertrand was penalised for a handball in the area despite his arm being tucked by his side. Ruben Neves didn’t care as he dispatched the penalty kick with confidence to level.

Pedro Neto provided a moment of sheer brilliance as his trickery and a clever curling shot from a narrow angle to give his side the lead. It was a great goal and it proved to be the winning goal with Southampton unable to find a way back into the game. Their best chance came ten minutes before time when James Ward-Prowse firing from 20 meters out, but Rui Patricio was equal to it.
