Mourinho loses at Stamford Bridge by an own goal

Reading Time: 3min | Tue. 30.09.25. | 23:59

Chelsea continued their bad display but won 1-0

Chelsea and Enzo Maresca needed this. After three defeats in four games, the Blues and their boss were under pressure to record a win and they somehow managed it. Chelsea won 1-0 against Benfica at Stamford Bridge and they managed to do it without Cole Palmer, Levi Colwill, Tosin, and Wesley Fofana, with players like Malo Gusto, Benoît Badiashile, Alejandro Garnacho, Facundo Buonanotte and Tyrique George in the starting line-up. But they won with a lot of luck as the visitors scored an own goal and the Blues didn’t play well again. This was Jose Murinho’s comeback to a place where he made a name for himself and in his 15th game against Chelsea he was defeated for the eight time, but he will hardly have something bad to say to his players. They fought well and had better opportunities than the hosts, but failed to use them. What is worse for Chelsea, who are already thin in the attacking position, Joao Pedro, who came on as a sub in the 61st minute managed to get two yellow cards (in the 62nd and 96th minute) and will not play against Ajax.

Benfica was the second best team in the first half but created better chances. It started in the seventh minute, when Lukebakio took a great low shot which Sanchez pushed onto the post. The second one came after 10 minutes, but Rios’s shot was not good and Sanchez saved it. Apart from those chances Chelsea had the domination but no chances came off from it, apart from the solo effort by Neto, which ended with a ball near the far post. Benfica finally scored in the 18th minute, but unfortunately, it was an own goal. Neto started the chance and the ball came to Garnacho on the left side but his cross was met by Rios who smashed it into his own net. Minutes later Lukebakio got the ball to Pavlidis but, Badiashile put his body in the way and prevented a goal.

Chelsea continued to dominate possession in the second half while Benfica had better chances. Unfortunately for them, they were all created while the visiting players were in offside. Chelsea were poor, without game management and if they played a stronger team than Benfica, they wouldn’t keep the clean sheet. The only good opportunity they had in the second half was from Neto in the 85th minute, but Trubin pushed the ball to safety.
