The legendary goalkeeper blocked the arrival of the Special One to the Italian national team

Jose Mourinho was reportedly in serious contention to take over as head coach of the Italian national team — but his appointment was blocked from within.

According to La Repubblica, the former Roma and Inter manager had strong backing, with technical sponsor Adidas even willing to chip in to cover part of his salary. The idea was more than just speculation: discussions had taken place, and Mourinho was seen as a credible replacement for Luciano Spalletti.

However, two major roadblocks stood in the way. First, Mourinho's current club, Fenerbahce, were unwilling to let him go without compensation. More critically, Italy’s delegation chief Gigi Buffon opposed the idea.

The Italian legend reportedly believed that the Azzurri needed a different profile — someone deeply rooted in Italian football culture, someone iconic. Buffon was said to have wanted a coach who could inspire and reset the team ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Amid earlier rumors suggesting he might step down if Roberto Mancini returned, Buffon clarified during Gennaro Gattuso’s unveiling press conference:

“My contract ends on June 30 every year, so resignations were never an issue. We chose Rino in consultation with the President and others involved. At this level, there are no good or bad coaches — only those who suit the team’s needs. And right now, it felt like the right time for Rino to take charge.”

In the end, the Azzurri opted for a familiar face in Gattuso, with Buffon’s influence proving key in shaping the direction of the national team.
