Mido's touch - The Egyptian's 'deja vu advice' and Spurs' refusal to hear him out

Reading Time: 3min | Fri. 24.01.25. | 18:33

Egypt's legend and former Premier League forward recommended two players from his homeland to his former club, Tottenham, but his suggestions were futile. Guess who the two are?

Football has always been full of the so-called "what could have been" stories. What could have been if a player had used a chance, failed to score, made a different decision on or off the pitch, signed with some other side, etc.? The "butterfly effect" would have then done its thing, but we can never know just how different things would have been.

One of those stories has caught the public eye, and even though we can't be sure what could have happened, in this case, we can get a hint and only imagine.

Namely, one of the greatest Egyptian players and former Premier League forward, Ahmed Hossam Hussein Abdelhamid Wasfi, better known as Mido, revealed an intriguing story regarding his former club Tottenham Hotspur, which at the same time pinpoints his "good eye" regarding player evaluation and Spurs' complete "lack of hearing" for Mido's advice.

Back in 2013, the Egyptian reached out to Tottenham via Twitter and recommended his then-21-year-old fellow countryman, Mohamed Salah, who represented Swiss Basel at the time, claiming that "he is better than Lamela" and "the player Tottenham need." Spurs neglected his suggestion, and Salah ended up being one of the greatest Premier League players in the 21st century.

But that was only the beginning, as the "deja vu" happened 11 years later, in April 2024! Once again, Mido wrote on the same social network, reminding Spurs of what had happened in the case of Salah and urging and begging them to "go for [Omar] Marmoush," as "he would fit in perfectly in Ange's system as a left or right winger."

This time, Man City played the role of Chelsea and Liverpool, snatching the Egyptian gem from Eintracht Frankfurt. So, when you start wondering why the North London side hasn't won a trophy since 2008, just remember Mido's story, and everything will become crystal clear.
