The Chelsea defender spoke about a potential return to the club where he came through the ranks, stressing how difficult it would be to turn down such a move
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has hinted that a return to Barcelona is something he would seriously consider in the future. While on international duty in Catalonia, the Spaniard admitted that the prospect of going back to his boyhood club would be hard to ignore. For now, though, he remains settled in London — even if his remarks have sparked fresh debate over what lies ahead in his career.
Cucurella’s journey to the top level hasn’t been straightforward. He began at Espanyol before moving to Barcelona’s La Masia academy in 2012, eventually picking up a Copa del Rey winner’s medal in 2018 after a brief senior appearance. In search of consistent minutes, he spent time on loan at Eibar and Getafe, where he made his name before earning a move abroad.

…I’d have to consider it and talk to my family, I’m not thinking about that”.

Brighton brought him to the Premier League in 2021 for €20 million, and his impact was immediate enough to convince Chelsea to invest heavily just a year later, paying €65.3 million for his signature. Since then, he has become an important figure at Stamford Bridge, contributing to silverware including the Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup, while also playing a role in Spain’s European Championship triumph in 2024. This season, he has featured 41 times in all competitions.
Despite his current stability, the pull of Barcelona clearly remains. Addressing the topic, Cucurella said: “It would be difficult to refuse. It’s not just about me. I’d have to think about my family. If it happens, it happens, and we’ll see what decision is made. You always think about going back. I’m very happy there, and so is my family. I’ll leave it for a few years from now.”
His comments come amid growing uncertainty surrounding several key Chelsea players. Enzo Fernandez, for instance, has recently been linked with a potential move to Real Madrid, adding to concerns about keeping the squad intact.
In the short term, however, attention remains firmly on the pitch. Spain are set to face Egypt in a friendly on March 31 as part of their build-up to next summer’s World Cup. Meanwhile, Chelsea have a demanding schedule ahead as they push for a top-four finish.
An FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale on April 4 is followed by crucial league fixtures, including home games against Manchester City and Manchester United, before a trip to Brighton. The challenges continue in May with tough encounters against Liverpool and Tottenham, leaving little room for error as they aim to rescue their season.
