Former AFC Leopards captain James Situma has given his verdict on the much anticipated Mashemeji Derby.
AFC Leopards will host arch rivals Gor Mahia at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on October 7 and the defender who wore the famous white and blue colors for four years is looking forward to an exciting fixture.
The Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA) top man says the derby does not recognizes who has a good run in the league and is open to any side that will pursue their chances.
"The Mashemeji Derby most of the time it does not matter who is doing well at the moment. It has a lot at stake and if you get it right you win on that day," he said.
The former Mathare United central defender further pointed out that the derbies always gives coaches humble time in preparing their charges as it has everyone buzzing for the oldest fixture on the soil.
"The beauty of it is that, it gives coaches an easy time preparing the team because back in their minds the players know it is going to be a tough game that needs a lot of effort and concentration," he added.
As the 94th edition of the bout approaches all eyes are glued on the Leopards to ascertain if the big cats can nick away their first three points of the season, which their former skipper believes with proper mindset, Ingwe can run away with maximum points.
"If they (Leopards) prepare well for the encounter and have a mindset to fight till the end I have trust in them winning this and kick starting their season officially," added the former Sofapaka guard.
Mashemeji Derby is undoubtedly, the most cherished football showpiece in the country dating back to May 5, 1968 when it was held for the first time ever at the Nairobi City Stadium.
Gor Mahia boast of the best statistical record in the derby, with 31 victories whereas Leopards have 27 wins, the sides have shared spoils 34 times.
