Reading Time: 3min | Sat. 07.03.26. | 18:11
For the fifth time this season, Pep Guardiola’s and Eddie Howe’s teams will face off, this time in the FA Cup
Newcastle United and Manchester City clash once again this evening for the fifth time across all competitions this season, this time in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
The Magpies have experienced a rollercoaster against the Citizens at St James’ Park, claiming a 2-1 Premier League win in November before falling 2-0 in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final two months later.
Newcastle bounced back from a home slump in the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Wednesday, despite finishing the match with 10 men.
Jacob Ramsey’s controversial red card was followed by Anthony Gordon’s penalty goal being cancelled out by Casemiro in first-half stoppage time, but a 90th-minute strike from Osula—his first since September—secured all three points for Eddie Howe’s side.
Currently 12th in the Premier League and nine points shy of the top six with nine matches remaining, Newcastle still face a tough task to clinch European football next season while juggling ambitions in both the Champions League and FA Cup.
Last season’s EFL Cup winners fell short of defending their crown this year, suffering a 5-1 semi-final aggregate defeat to Man City and a 2-1 loss at the Etihad in their most recent league meeting.
If City prevail tonight, they could become only the third team to knock Newcastle out of both domestic cups in the same season, following Wimbledon (1987-88) and Arsenal (2007-08).
However, Newcastle have a strong FA Cup history, advancing from nine of their last ten fifth-round ties—including victories over Manchester City in 1994-95 and 2001-02.
Manchester City, meanwhile, dropped points in the Premier League on Wednesday, settling for a 2-2 home draw with Nottingham Forest, thanks to Elliot Anderson’s 76th-minute equaliser.
Pep Guardiola’s side now sit seven points behind leaders Arsenal, and despite having a game in hand, momentum may be swinging in favour of Mikel Arteta’s title challengers—though twists in the title race remain far from ruled out.
Before turning their attention to a challenging Champions League last-16 tie with Real Madrid next week, City will face Newcastle in the FA Cup for the 11th time. Historically, the Citizens have progressed in only two of their first eight ties against the Magpies but have enjoyed success in the last two quarter-final meetings (2019-20 and 2023-24).
This season, Newcastle reached the fifth round by overcoming fellow Premier League sides Bournemouth and Aston Villa, while City have benefited from three own goals in wins over lower-league opposition Exeter City (10-1) and Salford City (2-0).
