Macharia disappointed despite goal against Otôho d'Oyo

Gor Mahia midfielder John Macharia registered his maiden CAF Confederation Cup goal in the 1-1 draw to Otôho d'Oyo on Sunday afternoon but the strike proved not enough as they were ousted from the tournament.

K’Ogalo were carrying a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in Brazzaville, Congo and needed to win more than a one-goal margin to progress but they fell short with a 1-1 draw at home.

Macharia scored almost immediately after Otôho had opened the scoring in the 10th minute but admitted the goal came in bittersweet circumstances. 

“Scoring felt nice because the competition is a huge one and it gives me confidence as we head into our next league games, when I was on the pitch I only thought of getting another goal,”

“I was not really satisfied with the goal because in the end we were eliminated, I would have been happier if we could have preceded to the Group Stages,” said Macharia. 

The midfielder joined K’Ogalo in the 2020-2021 off-season transfer window from Georgian side Guria and looks to have finally nailed down a regular starting berth this season. 

Macharia opened up on where he thought the side lost the battle against Otôho citing that the early goal dampened their spirits despite pulling level two minutes later. 

“Our first mistake was conceding at home, after the equalizer I knew we would get chances but I think we panicked after they scored - if we utilized our chances we could have knocked them out,”

“Otôho is not a team that is supposed to knock us out of the tournament, we created enough chances to win that game,” concluded Macharia.
