They thought two yellow cards are enough to get him suspended. And that's not the case
Liverpool's left-back Kostas Tsimikas missed Greece's 5-0 victory over Gibraltar in the EURO 2024 qualifiers because of an admin blunder, according to reports.
Greece manager and former Chelsea player Gustavo Poyet was incorrectly told that the 27-year-old was ineligible to face Gibraltar, having been booked against the Netherlands in the previous encounter.
That booking was the full-back's second in the European Championships qualification, with the Hellenic Football Federation seemingly believing two yellow cards resulted in a one-match suspension. However, rules state a suspension actually only occurs after three cautions.
Tsimikas wasn't the only player to miss out in such circumstances. Petros Mantalos, Dimitrios Kourbelis, and Manolis Siopis were also all ineligible to play, having been issued just two yellow cards so far during qualification.
🇬🇷Liverpool's Kostas Tsimikas was one of four players left out of the Greece squad to face Gibraltar at the weekend after the Greek FA thought they were suspended when they weren't.

Next in action against the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands during the October international break, with Tsimikas still in danger of picking up a one-match suspension should he be handed his third yellow card. Greece currently sit third in Group B, level on points with the Dutch having played one game more, but can still qualify via the play-offs.
