The Premier League bottom side managed to beat the current England champion
What a shock! It’s not like anybody is surprised when they see that Liverpool lost a game in the Premier League. The current champions are having a bad season and are fighting for a place in the Champions League with eight defeats but this one will really hurt. On Tuesday night, they managed to lose a game from the bottom side, in injury time: Wolverhampton – Liverpool 2-1. Wolves have found their form under the new boss Rob Edwards and after a 2-2 draw with Arsenal and 2-0 win over Aston Villa managed to defeat the current England champion.
Liverpool have won 83% of their Premier League games against Wolves, winning 19 of 23 games, and that is the best win ratio of any side to face another 20+ times in the competition’s history, but tonight they couldn’t break the Wolves’ low block and really created only two really good chances. The hosts managed to score from a counter attack late in the game after a miss from Van Dijk and had even more luck when the ball hit Gomez and changed direction in injury time. The Reds fans will not be conferred by the fact that Mohamed Salah finally scored in the Premier League after 122 days, as they didn’t even win a point in a battle with Chelsea and Aston Villa for the Premier League.
This was by far the most boring first half seen from Liverpool this season. We saw better halfs from the Reds even when they were trailing. There was really nothing happening in the first 45 minutes. Wolves coach Rob Edwards prepared for the visitors and Liverpool really struggled to sustain any sort of momentum. They had no obvious chances and didn’t even threatened from the corner kicks. The second half was more interesting than the first after just six minutes. First there was a penalty appeal in the 49th minute and then a miss of the season for Liverpool. The ball hit Krejci’s shoulder, but it was close to the body and VAR rightfully decided that no penalty should be given. And then Liverpool somehow managed to miss the unmissable. Ekitike headed the ball towards the far post after a corner and all Jones had to do was to touch the ball from one meter away. But, Gakpo’s boot touched the ball and it hit the crossbar.
Liverpool had over 80% possession at that point, but Wolves managed to prevail and even take a shocking lead in the 78th minute. It was a quick counter attack in which Van Dijk missed the long ball and Rodrigo Gomes managed to beat Konate and smashed the ball into the net. Two minutes later Sa produced a stunning save when he somehow managed to tip the ball after Rio’s shot. The ball went away and hit the post. When Bellegarde played a horrific pass straight to Salah who finally scored for the first time in the Premier League after November, it looked that the game will finish 1-1. But the Wolves managed to strike back in injury time. Andre moved towards the goal and then drilled a tame strike that nicked off Gomez and tricked Alisson for the shocking loss.
