The Champions League winner, European Super Cup holder, and reigning Ligue 1 champion is starting their quest for all trophies again. First stop – Nantes

Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain kick off their new season on Sunday night, traveling to face Nantes at the Stade de la Beaujoire.

PSG started the new campaign midweek by adding the French Super Cup to their trophy haul, edging Tottenham Hotspur on penalties. Having just returned from their Club World Cup duties, the Parisians looked rusty for much of the game, falling 2-0 behind to the Europa League winners in the opening 75 minutes. Yet Luis Enrique’s side eventually rallied, netting two late goals to force a shootout and secure the first silverware of the 2025-26 season.

The champions will be hoping that comeback signals what’s to come as they aim to continue their domestic dominance. After a stellar 2024-25 campaign, PSG are targeting a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title, having wrapped up last season 19 points clear at the top, despite a slight drop in form late in the season while focusing on the Champions League.

Early-season sharpness could be an issue, as shown in the Super Cup, but PSG boast an outstanding away record in Ligue 1, suffering just one defeat in their last 41 league trips. Last term, Enrique’s men fell just four games short of an unbeaten season, narrowly missing out on surpassing Nantes’ record of starting a season without defeat in 32 matches.

Nantes have historically caused PSG problems despite their struggles in recent years, holding the champions to 1-1 draws in both meetings last season, including a late equalizer from Douglas Augusto here in April. Still, the Canaries have lost 10 of their last 13 home encounters against PSG and haven’t kept a clean sheet against the Parisians since 2006—29 games ago.

The hosts also have a reputation for sluggish starts, failing to win their opening match in each of the last eight seasons—the longest current streak in Ligue 1. New manager Luis Castro, who replaced Antoine Kombouare over the summer, will hope to break that trend and lift Nantes from their habitual relegation battles.

Last season, the Canaries narrowly escaped the drop by three points, marking a third straight bottom-half finish for the club, a far cry from their recent European exploits.
