Xabi Alonso's side lost to Arminia 2-1 in the semi-final despite scoring the opening goal

One of the greatest upsets of the entire season in European football happened on Tuesday night, as third-tier Arminia Bielefeld shocked German Cup holders and reigning Bundesliga champion Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal semi-final!

Xabi Alonso's side suffered one of the most shocking cup defeats despite being 1-0 up after 17 minutes thanks to Jonathan Tah's opener. At that point, no one could have possibly imagined their loss, but the game took a U-turn almost instantly.

The underdogs, who are currently fourht in the 3. Liga, bounced back within the next three minutes through Worl before Grosser sealed the comeback in the dying seconds of the first half.

With this fantastic victory, Bielefeld have topped four top-division opponents on their way to the final Berlin final.

Arminia also became only the fourth third-division team to reach the showpiece event. There, they will face the winner of the RB Leipzig-Stuttgart tie, which is scheduled for Wednesday night.

If they pull off another, fifth sensational upset, Bielefeld will be rewarded with a Europa League spot next season.
