If they do not lose tonight against Mainz at the BayArena, Xabi Alonso's team will tie 33 games without defeat

Bayern Munich is the most trophy-winning, most successful and most popular football club in Germany. The Bavarians own numerous records, for some stands a question of whether they will ever lose them. But without one massive record, Bayern could stay without this Friday night. Bundesliga leader Bayer Leverkusen welcome Mainz, and if they remain unbeaten, it will be the 33rd consecutive game without defeat.

Bayern held the longest unbeaten streak until recently. In the period from December 2019 to September 2020, under the bat of Hans Dieter Flick, they went on a streak of 32 matches in which they did not lose. Bayer equaled that result in the last round with a triumph over Heidenheim (2-1).

Even better news awaited the Pharmacists a day later when Bayern lost to Bochum (2-3). Now the Leverkusen squad have a huge eight point advantage in the table and can relax a bit.

Again, not too much. Mainz are in the relegation zone, second to last in the table with 15 points, seven less than Mönchengladbach and the safe zone. However, they recently hired a new coach, former Midtjylland strategist Bo Henriksen, who made his debut in the last round with a victory over Augsburg (1-0), sat on the bench.

The Dane brought new energy to Mainz, ending a streak of 11 consecutive matches without a win. Belief in survival was reawakened, at least through the barrage and a double match with the third-ranked team from Bundesliga 2.

Leverkusen's strategist Xabi Alonso will not be able to count on the injured Victor Boniface, Ezequiel Palacios and Arthur. Mainz are missing several players - Fernandes, Hanche-Olsen, Leitsch, Weiper, Onisiwo and Bell are injured.

In the first half of the season, Leverkusen won 3-0 in Mainz.
