The Ivorian legend kickstarts his career as a first-team coach with the EFL Championship side

One of the most respected African footballers, Kolo Toure, who spent almost two decades playing for Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, is about to make a statement as a coach.

He has been appointed as the new Wigan Athletic boss on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The Latics sit 22nd in the EFL Championship table, with the relegation bells louder than ever. They were searching for a new boss since sacking Leam Richardson on November 10, just a fortnight after they handed him a new three-year deal following an eight-game winless run.

Wigan Athletic Chief Executive Malachy Brannigan said:

"We are delighted that Kolo has become the new manager of Wigan Athletic Football Club, and the Board are pleased that he believes in the vision of the Club and wants to be the man to take us forward."

The Ivorian, 41, had been working as an assistant manager at Leicester City since February 2019. Toure will make his managerial debut, which will come on December 10, when the Latics travel to The Den to take on Millwall.
