Club top scorer Elvis Rupia was entrusted with the armband despite official club captain Robinson Kamura also being in the starting eleven

There was an immediate sense of bafflement yesterday when AFC Leopards took on Mathare United in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL).

Club top scorer Elvis Rupia was entrusted with the armband despite official club captain Robinson Kamura also being in the starting eleven, something that amazed the privileged onlookers on the grounds and fans glued to their screens.

The club captain has however moved in swift to allay any growing concerns as to why he was stripped of the armband and maintained that he is still the official club captain and nothing has changed about his leadership status following the match.

“What I can say is that Rupia being given the armband was an internal club affair. I am still the team captain but we have many captains. The coach saw it fit to give another player the armband because I have not been okay as I have been undergoing a lot off the pitch.

"He decided to do that so as to take the pressure off my shoulders to enable me to focus only on performing and not to have any added responsibility to deal with. At the end of the day, the team comes first,” the club captain revealed to Mozzart Sport.

Despite the concerns, the armband decision somewhat sparked Rupia into life as the striker found the solitary winning goal of the game with his twelfth strike of the season, a goal that put an end to a four-match goalless streak.

With the all-important telling goal from the captain of the game, Ingwe moved joint-top of the league table on 36 points, level with KCB who have a superior goal difference.
