The Portuguese internationals reinforced the Catalans
Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix are the new players of Barcelona! At least for the season... An hour before the closing of the summer football market, the Portuguese duo is confirmed as reinforcements for the Catalan giants. It wasn't quite 'last minute', but it was tight and we waited all day... Nevertheless, the will of the players in combination with their agent Jorge Mendes and Barca's director Deco eventually brought the Catalans two capital reinforcements for the continuation of the season. Barça had to get rid of some players today and make room for Felix and Cancelo's salary, but they succeeded. Lenglet went to Aston Villa, Fati to Brighton, Eric Garcia to Girona and Abde Ezzalzouli to Betis. Enough to make room for a tandem of Portuguese national team members.
Both arrived on loan. Joao Felix came from Atlético Madrid on a free loan without the buyout option, and Barcelona took over his entire salary, which amounts to 14,000,000 euros gross per season, but tonight it was "stretched" in order to keep Barca within the limits of Financial Fair Play.
Felix first extended his contract with the Madridians until 2029 so that his salary and depreciation would cost Barça less as the contract was stretched over a longer period. It was done so that Atletico hold all the cards in their hands next summer because the Catalans will again have to come to the negotiating table with them next summer.
Felix is the most expensive signing in the history of Atlético. Benfica paid him 127,000,000 euros four years ago as one of the most talented players in Europe. Many believed that his speed and technique would be the perfect weapon for the murderous counter attacks of Diego Simeone's team, but the Portuguese never pasted the Lisbon performances to Madrid.
He scored only 31 goals in 131 games in the Colchoneros shirt, so last winter left Madrid after three and a half years and moved to Chelsea on loan. However, the Blues did not keep him and Simeone did not want him back. He skipped training this summer, damaged relations with the entire dressing room and it was clear that he no longer had a future at Atletico. He didn't want to go to Aston Villa, he waited for Barcelona and received a call thanks to agent Jorge Mendes and Barça director Deco. Felix will take the place of Ansu Fati and strengthen the competition in the attack Ferran Torres, Raphinha, Lewandowski and young Lamine Yamal await him.

Mendes and Deco played key roles in Cancelo's transfer as well. Since last winter, the right-back has burned all bridges in the relationship with Pep Guardiola at City and then went on a six-month loan to Bayern. The Bavarians didn't buy him and he returned to Manchester, but Guardiola didn't even want to hear about him. Barcelona convinced Cancelo all summer and finally succeeded. Although Bayern contacted him today with the desire to hire him again, this time he did not want to and waited for Barça. Blaugrana had to loan out Eric Garcia to Girona in order to get the green light for a loan from Manchester City. In exchange for Cancelo, the English club demanded that Barca let Garcia go to Girona because both clubs are owned by the City Group. When Barça let the sweeper into the neighborhood, the transfer of Cancelo could be realized. He is also on loan without the right to purchase the contract, and he will fill the position of right back, which was one of Barcelona's weakest points in previous years.
