It comes down to this - FKFPL title on the line on Sunday

Kenya Police just need a point to get over the line while Gor Mahia can only hope things go their way

The race for this season’s FKF Premier League title could be decided this afternoon, as the campaign reaches the penultimate stage at various grounds across the country.

Given the tight battle at the bottom — where just four points separate the team in 13th from basement side Nairobi City Stars — all eyes will be fixed on the league’s top two as they fight to deliver the crown.

The maths, unlike a few weeks ago, is easy.

If Kenya Police get at least a draw against Shabana at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, then it is all wrapped up, and Etienne Ndayiragije’s side are champions for the first time in club history.

A loss, and then all eyes will be on second-placed Gor Mahia, who will at that point be needing a win to extend the title race to next weekend.

The latter, just a few minutes after defending champions Gor Mahia dropped crucial points against fierce rivals AFC Leopards, looked a tough ask, as per Zedekiah Otieno.

The K’Ogalo coach, perhaps carrying the emotions of the stalemate that left his side six points behind Police, claimed Gor Mahia “cannot talk about the league anymore”, and needed to shift attention to more realistic things like winning the Mozzart Bet Cup, where they are in the final.

A few weeks of punching some figures, and Otieno now believes “anything is possible in football.”

His best example of that prospect? Saudi Arabia upsetting Argentina in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

In Otieno’s world, “anything” would mean a Gor Mahia win against Ulinzi Stars at Ulinzi Sports Complex this afternoon, and a loss for Kenya Police.

Then roll on next Sunday, and Gor Mahia are beating Kenya Police to extend their domestic stranglehold.

That proposition, at least based on Gor Mahia’s recent league form - no wins in three - will tip the scales of monumental bail-outs and collapses, but that is what football is about.

“We are going to make history and win the league against Shabana, so that we just play our last game against Gor without any pressure,” Ndariyagije threw his curve-ball in an interview with Nation Sport.

An intriguing day surely lies in wait.
