Born Neapolitan was furious with his team-mates after the Sassuolo draw, reports in Italy claim he called his team a 's*** squad' after they conceded late

Just a few seasons ago, Napoli were one of the toughest sides to face in the Serie A. Results under Walter Mazzarri and Maurizio Sarri brought back that sense of pride Neapolitans nurture so well. However, lately, their Scudetto pursuit is not going that well.

The team from Diego Armando Maradona Stadium keeps struggling in their attempt to participate in next season's Champions League campaign and it is taking a toll on everyone in the club. But mostly on the manager Gennaro Gattuso and the team captain Lorenzo Insigne.

Referring to the article from Sportsmail, Insigne furiously stormed off the pitch and reportedly described his own team as a 's*** squad' after they conceded a late penalty in a 3-3 draw at Sassuolo, Italian media claim. Gennaro Gattuso's side came from behind twice in the game before Insigne scored a 90th-minute penalty that looked to have handed Napoli all three points. But Sassuolo went down the other end of the pitch and won a stoppage-time spot-kick, conceded by Napoli defender Kostas Manolas, that was converted by Francesco Caputo.

Footage shows a livid Insigne walking down the tunnel at the full-time whistle and angrily shouting something back towards the pitch. According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Insigne was caught saying 's*** squad' as he hit out at his own team-mates. It is unclear whether he was referring to Napoli or Sassuolo but reports in Italy insist he was criticising his own team-mates as they gave up more ground in the race for Champions League football next season. It is claimed Insigne also threw a water bottle and kicked the advertising boards at the entrance to the changing rooms as he continued to hurl insults at his own players.

Gattuso spoke to Insigne after he had vented all of his anger. The player's relationship with Gattuso continues to deteriorate and it is thought Insigne's unhappiness with the manager can influence the decisions of the club's hierarchy.

Gattuso has been clinging to his job for several weeks now after a disappointing season for a club who were regular challengers to Juventus in recent years. Napoli are out of both the Coppa Italia and the Europa League, leaving a top-four finish in Serie A as the club's last possible achievement this season.

Fans are also said to be growing frustrated of Gattuso's methods, with the club now five points off the Champions League places - but they do have a game in hand over Atalanta and Roma. Napoli take on Bologna on Sunday night but then face a triple-header against AC Milan, Juventus and Roma - a run of games that could decide Gattuso's fate.
