Homeboyz threw away good chances and in the end had to settle for a point
Kakamega Homeboyz FC head coach Patrick Odhiambo has explained the reason for his two substitutions against Al Hilal Benghazi, changes that raised a few eyebrows on the pitch.
With the game tied at 0-0 at halftime, Odhiambo withdrew winger Kevin Amwayi, who had been visibly one of the sharper players in the first half, and replaced him with midfielder Stephen Opoku.
With 23 minutes left, he took off lead striker Moses Shumah and replaced him with Tanzanian forward Oscar Paul.
The game ended in a 0-0 draw, and the two teams will face off again in the return leg in a week’s time in Libya. The aggregate winner will qualify for the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
In his post-match interview, the coach was asked questions about the two changes, and he explained that they were both tactical switches.
"I took Amwayi off because I had seen he had put in a big shift in the first half, but I needed more punch in the second half; I needed more speed, and that was my reason for bringing on Opoku. Amwayi did not play badly, but we thought it was important to bring in a different kind of player," Odhiambo said.
"I wanted speed because we intended to hit them on the break and at speed. I was looking at the quality of the speed we had. The last two matches we have played, Opoku has been coming in and bringing life into the team.".
"Shumah also played well, and when I subbed on Oscar Paul, I wanted him to carry on with the work Shumah had done because it was very important to get a goal. He got some good opportunities that maybe if he had taken, we would have won the game," he added.
