The team began their campaign on Sunday, 3 August with a 1-0 win over DR Congo courtesy of a 45+2 minute strike from Gor Mahia star Austine Odhiambo, in a match played at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.

After the match, President Ruto visited the Stars changing room to congratulate the boys and reaffirm his support.

It was during the brief engagement that goalkeeper Farouk Shikhalo used the opportunity to pass a request from the Head of State.

“As Kibet (cheekily referring to Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet), I have just a single concern. Kindly remember us in these affordable housing units. Please remember us,” pleaded Shikhalo.

The President who burst into laughter in the manner the Bandari FC goalkeeper referred to himself, took time to promise to consider the request.

“On that affordable housing, I know how I will handle you people. I will 'organize' you on those affordable,” said President Ruto.

The promise followed an earlier pledge on Saturday, 2 August of various financial rewards to the team including Ksh1 million for each player for every win in the tournament and Ksh500,000 for a draw.
