The men's national football team, Harambee Stars have received an invitation to participate in the special edition of the 2025 Mapinduzi Cup.
The Mapinduzi Cup will be a peculiar one as it will depart from the usual norm of having clubs competing and in turn will have national teams participating.
The choice of national teams is to use the tournament to prepare for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will be taking part in CHAN which is scheduled to kick off on 1 February 2025.
Speaking to the press, Vice Chairman of the organizing committee Suleiman Jabir confirmed the start date of the historic tournament as well as the format that it will take.
“The competition begins on 3 January and the finals will be played on 14 January. Before then, a draw will be conducted to put teams into pools for the tournament that will be held at Gombani Pemba as Aman Stadium is undergoing renovations,” said Jabir as quoted by Mwanaspoti.
Jabir also confirmed the participation of various national teams including Kenya's Harambee Stars.
“National teams that will participate include Zanzibar Heroes, Kenya, Uganda, Kilimanjaro Stars, Burundi and Burkina Faso,” he added.
Jabir also disclosed the various activities that will be part of the tournament apart from football as well as individual awards.
“Apart from football, the committee will also organize different surprises to spice up the tournament and make everyone happy. There will also be different prices that include individual awards as will be announced later,” he stated
Jabir also confirmed that the winner of the tournament will walk home with Tsh100 million (approximately Ksh 5,203,000,).
The tournament will be the first national team assignment for the new FKF office led by President Hussein Mohammed and his deputy, MacDonald Mariga should Kenya honour the invite.
