Half of the La Liga teams will play in Europe!?

The picture of Spanish clubs' qualification for European competitions next season is becoming clearer. The elimination of Real Sociedad from the Copa del Rey has secured a place in the Conference League for the eighth-place team in La Liga. It’s almost impossible for Spain to lose that spot, considering their lead over Italy in the UEFA coefficient rankings. This also means that the fifth-place team in Spain’s top tier will play in the Champions League. The chances for this are 98%. This means that Spain will have five clubs in the highest tier of European football.

Looking at this situation, one spot in the Europa League remains open, which will be awarded based on the strength of the leagues. In other words, everything will depend on the position of teams from La Liga, along with the additional spot secured by Real Sociedad's elimination. As things stand, Athletic Bilbao, Villarreal, and Betis will fight for two spots in the Champions League (fourth and fifth places), assuming Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atlético Madrid have already secured their spots in that competition.

Two Europa League spots will go to the team that falls short in the Champions League race, as well as the seventh-place team in the standings: Rayo Vallecano, Celta Vigo, Mallorca, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, and Getafe are candidates for those spots, as well as for the eighth place in the Conference League. Girona and Osasuna are also in the running.

To make it easier for you: The top five teams go directly to the Champions League, the sixth and seventh places go to the Europa League without needing qualifiers, and the eighth-place team will play in the Conference League, provided they pass the qualifications.

On top of that, there’s a possibility of having six teams from La Liga in the Champions League, meaning a total of nine in Europe. It all depends on the fate of Athletic Bilbao and Betis in both European and domestic competitions. For example, if Athletic Bilbao wins the Europa League and finishes in fifth place in the domestic league, they would go directly to the Champions League, pushing the sixth-place team into the Champions League as well. This would mean the seventh and eighth teams would play in the Europa League, and the ninth would play in the Conference League. Incredible, right?
