Haaland takes up the African PL legend's challenge

Reading Time: 2min | Sun. 19.01.25. | 16:55

Former Arsenal and Man City forward, the Togolese Emmanuel Adebayor, is the only player in Premier League history to bag a hat-trick against the same opponent in the same season

Ever since he joined Man City, Erling Haaland has been breaking records. He scored the most goals in a 38-game Premier League season, became the first player to score nine times in the opening four games of a season, became the first player to score hat-tricks in three consecutive home games in the Premier League, etc.

However, since he signed a historic deal with the Cityzens until 2034, he apparently wants to continue writing history in England's top flight. And he'll have a chance to equal another record just today against Ipswich (19.30).

Namely, only one player in Premier League history has managed to bag two hat-tricks against the same opponent in the same season - former Arsenal and Man City forward Emmanuel Adebayor. The Togolese accomplished that with the Gunners against Derby County in the 2007/2008 season.

Given that he scored thrice against the Tractor Boys in a 4-1 win last August, today he could equal Adebayor's record. However, Man City are far from the form they were in at the beginning of the season, so the Norwegian will be up for a much more challenging task at Portman Road Stadium than at Etihad five months ago.
