Heading into the game, Gor were riding on three consecutive league victories. After an opening-day loss to Bidco United, they bounced back impressively with wins over Sofapaka FC, KCB FC, and Posta Rangers.
Mathare United, meanwhile, had endured an inconsistent start to the campaign but arrived buoyed by their weekend 1-0 victory over Shabana FC at the Gusii Stadium.
Gor Mahia started brightly, dominating possession and creating early chances. Shariff Musa, lively down the left flank, proved a constant menace for Mathare defender Sammy Imbuye.
The winger’s 13th-minute delivery found Patrick Esombe, who failed to connect with the goal at his mercy.
Moments later, Austin Odhiambo’s shot was blocked after another teasing Musa cross.
Esombe came close again in the 25th minute, narrowly missing the target from Bryton Anyona’s cross.
Mathare thought they had taken the lead a minute later when Brian Ouru found the net, but his effort was ruled out for offside. The visitors had another chance in the 31st minute, but Fidel Otieno was denied by Bryne Omondi in Gor’s goal.
K'Ogalo continued to press, with Sylvester Owino’s header from a set piece blocked before Esombe squandered another opportunity inside the box. The first half ended goalless, a result Mathare were surely happier with.
Three minutes after the restart, Gor finally broke the deadlock. Paul Ochuoga whipped in a dangerous cross from the right, and Musa was perfectly placed to tap home, giving K’Ogalo a deserved lead.
Moments later, Mathare goalkeeper Kevin Ouru pulled off a superb save to deny Felix Oluoch from close range.
Gor Mahia continued to dictate proceedings, with Esombe and Musa stretching Mathare’s defence on both wings. Alpha Onyango came close to doubling the lead midway through the half, his effort missing the target by inches.
Substitute Bryson Wangai then scored the visitor's second in stoppage time as Gor Mahia claimed maximum points to extend their winning streak to four matches.
Next up, Mathare United face AFC Leopards on Sunday at Nyayo Stadium, while Gor Mahia will host Ulinzi Stars on the same day at Kasarani.
