The figure represented a modest increase of KSh 65,050 from their previous home fixture against KCB

Gor Mahia failed to hit the KSh 1 million mark in gate earnings during their home clash against Mathare United, despite securing a thrilling 2-1 victory at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, 28 February.

The club, posting updates across its official social media channels, confirmed that KSh 941,200 was collected from the encounter.

“We managed to collect KSh 941,200 from today's match against Mathare United. Thanks to all fans for the good support, you make the club what it is,” the statement read.

Although shy of the million-shilling target, the figure represented a modest increase of KSh 65,050 from their previous home fixture against KCB, where the club banked KSh 876,150.

The Mathare United game marked the sixth consecutive home outing in which Gor Mahia failed to hit the million-shilling mark, with the last record-breaking collection coming during the Mashemeji Derby against arch rivals AFC Leopards, where the club raked in KSh 7,011,500.

In regular league matches, K’Ogalo’s worrying failure to cross the million-shilling threshold stretched to eight games. The last time they surpassed the mark in a league fixture was on 2 November 2025, when they recorded KSh 1,323,800 in their 1-1 draw with Ulinzi Stars.

On the pitch, however, the record 21-time Kenyan Premier League champions showed their championship pedigree.

Ghanaian forward Ebenezer Adu Assifuah opened the scoring eight minutes past the hour mark, finishing a precise delivery from Jackson Dwang past goalkeeper Kevin Ouru.

Mathare United responded late in the game, with Dennis Okoth equalising seven minutes from full time from a well weighted cross by former Gor Mahia midfielder Musa Masika, setting up a tense finale.

Gor Mahia, however, secured all three points in dramatic fashion when Enock Morrison converted a penalty in the dying minutes after Assifuah was fouled in the buildup, sending Ouru the wrong way to clinch the 2-1 win.

The victory extended the Charles Akonnor coached side’s unbeaten run to seven matches, moving them to 49 points, a comfortable nine point lead over joint second placed AFC Leopards and Shabana, both on 40 points, who lock horns on Sunday.

The result also strengthened Gor Mahia’s quest for a 22nd league title as the club aims to bounce back from a rare trophyless campaign last season.
