The Kenyan defender played 90 minutes and put in a satisfactory display, despite his team's loss

After the elimination from the UEFA Europa League qualifiers by the famous Ajax, Vojvodina and Collins Sichenje continued their European path at UEFA Conference League qualifiers, facing the Slovenian side Maribor, led by former Atalanta player Josip Ilicic. The Serbian side was a man down during the last 20 minutes, losing the game by a 97th minute goal - 2-1.

Maribor initially mainly relied on counterattacks and left space for Vojvodina centre-backs to organize the attacks from the back. Of the two defenders, Sichenje is much better with the ball in his feet, so most Vojvodina's actions started from him. Although the Serbian side had the possession advantage in the beginning, the host team was more concrete, creating a few chances, but Vosa's keeper, Lazar Carevic, was careful.

As the end of the first 45 minutes neared, Vojvodina was increasingly in control of the game. Ilicic and Maribor's Ivorian forward Etienne Beugre were almost invisible, mainly thanks to Sichenje and his fellow defenders. Moreover, the Red and Whites' main problem was the offence, while the defensive end functioned decently. The Kenyan didn't hesitate to carry the ball if necessary, sent excellent long balls towards the wingers, and generally instilled confidence.

After the goalless first half, the game continued like in the first 45 minutes while Sichenje battled out with the strong and cunning Beugre. Nevertheless, a quarter of an hour into the second half, things started going South for Vojvodina. Marko Bozic went down in the box after Mihai Butean's tackle and the ref pointed to the spot. Carevic saved the experienced Ilicic's strike, but the ball rebounded back to the Slovenian, who managed to find the net and bring his team the lead.

Only ten minutes later, the sub, Slobodan Medojevic was sent off, and the situation was more than difficult for Vosa. After the red card, Maribor logically took control of the game, and only thanks to Vojvodina's keeper did the result remain 1-0.

And then, when nobody expected it, in the 77th minute, the Ivorian Caleb Zady levelled the score, securing the draw to Vojvodina. However, in the 98th minute, the Algerian El Arbi Soudani shocked the Serbian side and brought a triumph to Maribor.

Despite the loss, Sichenje played the entire game, coped very well with the rival experienced and robust forwards, and, most importantly, was very focused, although his team was a man down. The return game will be played next Thursday in Novi Sad, Serbia.
