Giroud is coming home?

The former Arsenal striker got a call to come back from the USA

When Olivier Giroud left AC Milan last summer to join Los Angeles FC, it seemed like the French veteran was quietly winding down a great career. Judging by his performances in the MLS, it looked like the American game didn’t quite suit him—he scored just five goals in 37 matches, and at the ongoing Club World Cup, he’s been more of a substitute than a starte. Still, Giroud is considered capable of playing serious European football. Despite being 38 and no longer a prolific scorer, he has received an offer from France to return home.

Lille is facing a major problem up front, and they hope Giroud could be the solution. The northern French club has lost its top scorer and best player, Jonathan David, as well as their second striker, Chuba Akpom at the beginning of the transfer window. Their only traditional strikers currently available are Trevis Dago and Mohamed Bayo, both returning from loan spells—but neither appears to be a definitive answer.

That’s why Lille has come up with the idea to bring Giroud back to France after 14 years abroad. The experienced striker has a contract with Los Angeles FC until the end of the year, with an option for a one-year extension. He earns three million euros per year—above Lille’s usual wage standards. However, if Giroud agrees to a pay cut and is intrigued by the idea of returning to France, Lille could find themselves with an excellent attacking solution. But even if he signs, they will have to find another striker.
