Gabon secures three points against Comoros without Aubameyang

Reading Time: 2min | Tue. 11.01.22. | 00:06

Aaron-Salem Boupendza scored the only goal of the match

Mainly due to Morocco’s win over Ghana and the quality of Comoros’ team, Gabon is sitting in second place in Group C of AFCON. Without their star player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, The Panthers scored the only goal of the match, and it was enough against a debutant team at this year’s AFCON, but things would surely be different if against them was any other team. Gabon won, but their game was far from good. They created only one chance apart from the goal, and the winner itself was really a great solo effort. If anybody else played against Gabon tonight, they would surely win, since the Panthers keeper Amonome was very insecure. Even the Coelacanths realized that and had two good chances, but somehow, didn’t score.

In Group C, where Ghana and Morocco are all but guaranteed to advance to the next stage, Comoros and Gabon match was probably the only chance to secure any points in this tournament. The AFCON debutants could have used the fact that Aubameyang was not playing in this match (Covid positive after partying in Dubai), but they are just too weak. They challenged Amonome only twice, from a distance in the 72nd minute and in the 73rd minute, when M’Changama tried to score directly from a corner kick.

Gabon were lucky to score at all since they didn’t show much during the game. Actually, it was the Coelacanths who had the initiative, but they just weren’t good enough to score. Aaron-Salem Boupendza scored the only goal of the match, after a great solo effort when he took a shot from almost a dead angle. He was basically not aiming at all, but the ball went in and a goal was excellent. Everything else in this match is already forgotten.
