The midfielder says playing further up in midfield has also contributed in his improved tally
Nairobi City Stars attacking midfielder Vincent Owino has revised his individual targets upwards after managing to reach five goals in twelve rounds.
Owino, who scored a brace last weekend in their 3-1 win over Kariobangi Sharks, is the leading scorer at City Stars, courtesy of the five goals he has scored so far.
The soft-spoken midfielder revealed that he had set to score at least eight league goals in the season as his irreducible minimum.
However, Owino has changed his mind, and will seek to pass the twelve-goal mark following the fruitful start to his campaign.
"The goal returns I have achieved so far have given me confidence and belief that I can score more. I had a target of getting at least eight goals this season, but I believe I have what it takes to score more than twelve," he told Mozzart Sport.
Owino, who joined City Stars in February from FC Talanta, disclosed that hard work was the inspiration behind his goal-scoring form this season, unlike the past ones where he has been predominantly used in carrying the ball forward.
He also pointed to a change of roles in midfield, as he has been playing behind the center forward, rather than in his preferred central defensive role for the increased goal tally.
"The coach has been using me as a playmaker of late, which places me closer to the goal. I have also been scoring from set pieces," he explained.
Meanwhile, Owino challenged the team to tighten their defense so that they could stand a chance of a respectable finish.
City Stars have the worst defense in the league this season, as the team has conceded 22 goals, five more than they have scored in the twelve matches played.
"We have to improve defence-wise. We have been conceding easy goals, especially from set pieces," he offered.
