Police and hospital reports indicate that 72 individuals were treated for injuries emanating from the chaos on Sunday

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) says it is “deeply concerned” by the unfortunate incidents of fan violence that marred the highly anticipated FKF Premier League match between Gor Mahia and Shabana at Gusii Stadium on Sunday 4 March, and is promising to take "decisive disciplinary measures" upon conclusion of its ongoing investigation.

In a Sunday evening statement, FKF confirmed it had received reports from police and three hospitals: Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, RAM Hospital and Christamarianne Hospital, indicating that 72 individuals from the match were treated for injuries.

According to Daily Nation, violence between opposing fan bases began hours to the scheduled 1400 EAT kickoff, as spectators “fought over seating allocations at the terraces.”

It is understood that Shabana, who were the hosts, had been allocated 10 stands in the 12,000 seater stadium, with Gor Mahia only given three.

The report indicated that Gor Mahia fans “began pushing into the Shabana-designated stands, sparking confrontations.”

Kickoff was understandably delayed for 42 minutes, with players only setting foot on the pitch at 1438 EAT.

The game, which ended 1-0 in favor of Gor, was however constantly interrupted by projectiles, mainly escalating after the visitors took the lead in the 79th minute through defender Sylvester Owino.

A lengthy stoppage ensued late on, with the game coming to an end way after the 100-minute mark.

FKF said: “We strongly condemn all forms of violence in our stadiums. Football must remain a sport that brings people together - not one that puts lives at risk.

We are working closely with relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest. Decisive disciplinary measures will be taken upon conclusion of ongoing investigations.”

The Federation also urged members of the public and media to “refrain from circulating unverified reports, particularly claims of fatalities.”
