Fabregas to lead CECAFA Kagame Cup draw as Gor Mahia await opponents

Kenyan champions, Gor Mahia, will discover their path to regional glory on Friday when the draw for the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup will conducted in Kigali, Rwanda.

The record FKF Premier League champions are among the 12 clubs that will be drawn into three groups of four, with only the group winners and the best second-placed team progressing to the semi-finals.

The draw will be held at the Amahoro National Stadium Press Conference Room from 10 am local time, with former Rwanda captain Haruna 'Fabregas' Niyonzima assisting in the ceremony.

Gor Mahia qualified for the regional tournament after reclaiming the FKF Premier League title and will represent Kenya in this year's competition, which will run from 24 July to 7 August in Kigali.

CECAFA Competitions Manager Yusuf Mossi said the tournament will also serve as crucial preparation for clubs ahead of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup campaigns, which begin in September.

Following the confirmation of Tanzania's Singida Black Stars as the final participant, Gor Mahia could be drawn against any of APR FC, Rayon Sports, Simba SC, Singida Black Stars, Vipers SC, Al Hilal SC, El Merriekh SC, Mogadishu City FC, Jamus SC, FC Garde Républicaine or KVZ FC.

Singida Black Stars head into the tournament as defending champions after defeating Sudan's Al Hilal in last year's final, while APR FC finished third when the competition was staged in Dar es Salaam.

Before turning their attention to the Kagame Cup, Gor Mahia will first take part in the annual Rayon Sports Day celebrations, where they are scheduled to face hosts Rayon Sports in a high-profile international friendly in Kigali.

Last year, Kenya Police FC flew the Kenyan flag in the tournament but failed to progress beyond the group stage after managing just one victory.
