Expensive marriage is over: Sterling leaves Chelsea

Reading Time: 3min | Wed. 28.01.26. | 20:22

The former England international is the biggest flop so far in Todd Boehli era in Chelsea

In the ‘new era’, led by co-owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea spent billions of pounds on various signings. One of them was Raheem Sterling and it was an expensive miss. The former Manchester City forward was finally released from his wealthy contract by mutual consent and ended the agony for both the club and the player. “Raheem Sterling has today departed Chelsea Football Club by mutual agreement, bringing to an end three-and-a-half seasons as our player, having signed in the summer of 2022 when he was transferred from Manchester City” reads Chelsea’s short statement which had only one more sentence – thanking a player for his contribution.

The point is, his contribution was terrible, due to many factors. In 2022 he signed a five-year deal and the transfer was worth 50 million pounds at the time. He ended his contact with 18 more moths left and can finally find a new permanent transfer. He was sent on a loan to Arsenal last season, but that was also a failure. Although it has not been officially announced anywhere, media in the UK suggest that Chelsea’s executives agreed with Sterling to pay him 11,500,000 euros in severance. The estimate is that the former England international cost the people at Stamford Bridge more than 120,000,000 euros. In return, they got 19 goals and 15 assists in 81 matches, and not a single trophy during their partnership.

Fulham and Napoli were interested in him this year, as it was obvious that he is out of favor with former coach Enzo Maresca, but the clubs wanted a loan deal and the player was not interested. After all, his fantastic wage was a stunning 325.000 pounds per week and the clubs only wanted a loan. Chelsea tried to ‘force’ him out by sending him to train along with other unwanted players and he was a part of so called ‘bomb squad’. The former England internationals posted a story on his Instagram account, showing empty training pitches and time (20:21) with the caption 'training' alongside a handshake and cold face emoji. The situation obviously didn’t change much by the time Liam Rosenior took over and finally, both parties agreed on a contract termination. As a free agent, Sterling will have an option to find another club regardless of the January transfer window deadline.
