The experienced Greek defender is a potential solution to the fragile defense of the Bavarians
According to German Bild, Bayern Munich want to sign former Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos. The recent Olympiakos sweeper is on the shortlist of players that the Bavarians believe can fill the gaps that the team from the Allianz Arena has in the heart of the defense.
After a spate of injuries that plagued Thomas Tuchel's back line in recent weeks, the Munich giants are looking for reinforcements as they aim to fight on three fronts this season. The potential signing of Jerome Boateng, who is training with Bayern's second team, fell through due to fan criticism, so the "eternal" champion of Germany identified another option in the position of central defender.
Sokratis has been a free agent since leaving Olympiakos this summer, and recently turned down a move to Betis. Despite the fact that the negotiations with the Spanish team were going towards the finalization of the deal, the Green and Whites did not fully convince the Greek defender to come to Seville.
Therefore, Bayern are in a position to make a move towards signing the 35-year-old, who has a positive relationship with Tuchel since the time they worked together for Westfalen in the Borussia Dortmund camp. However, Bayern did not go 'on the attack' yet.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos offers the experience Bayern are looking for in a fragile defensive unit. Regardless, the Bavarians will refrain from making any move until it is fully known how long Dayot Upamecano and Matthijs de Ligt will be out, that is, until it is determined whether they can wait until the opening of the January transfer window.
