Benfica make their record signing for the Turkey international

Turkish international midfielder Orkun Kokcu has signed for Benfica from Feyenoord for a club record $26.9 million, the Portuguese champions announced on Saturday.

The 22-year-old has signed a five-year deal. Kokcu scored eight goals in 32 league appearances this season to help Feyenoord win their first Dutch Eredivisie title since 2017 and only second of the 21st century.

Benfica's previous biggest transfer fee was the $26 million they paid to sign Darwin Nunez from Almeria in 2020.

Kokcu has previously been linked with moves to Leeds, Roma and Sevilla in the past two years - among quite a few others, but he stayed loyal to the Dutch club and was a part of Arne Slot's spectacular side, which won the Eredivisie after a six-year wait. His midfield displays were immense for both clubs and country, triggering interest from Benfica, a well-established Champions League participant.

It's a step in the right direction for Kokcu but also a sad day for Feyenoord fans. Kokcu leaves after spending nine years in Rotterdam.

The Lisbon giants also announced Friday that Argentinian World Cup winning defender Nicolas Otamendi had signed a two-year contract extension.
