Derby of the ill-fortunate

Ahead of the Ligue 1 clash between the two Olympiques, Lyon and Marseille, it's hard to determine which side has more problems

Even though Paris Saint-Germain's "terror" in Ligue 1 has lasted for more than ten years and even though neither of today's rivals has won the title since 2010, the duel between the two Olympiques, Lyon and Marseille, has to be considered a derby.

However, this season's first "Clash of the Olympics" (21.45) will be a derby of the ill-fortunate, as it's hard to determine which side currently has more problems.

On one side, Lyon were on the verge of relegation thanks to their owner, John Textor, numerous key players left their ranks, and the last one to hit the road was Georges Mikautadze, who recorded 17 goals and 11 assists last season, as the Georgian is set to join Villarreal.

Nevertheless, despite the departures and financial struggles, Lyon managed to compose a decent team and start the new Ligue 1 season with two victories, over Lens on the road and Metz at home, which undoubtedly gives them a significant confidence boost ahead of tonight's match.

On the other hand, Marseille are still trying to recover from the scandal that occurred a few weeks back, when Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe got into a physical altercation, and the club consequently placed them on the transfer list.

In addition, the cause of the fight was Marseille's defeat to Rennes in the opening Ligue 1 round, which put them in a subordinate position compared to Paris Saint-Germain from day one.

Still, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's return and fine goal-scoring form can please Marseille fans ahead of the duel against Lyon. The Gabonese bagged a brace against Paris eight days ago, showing he's ready to continue where he stopped a year ago when he left L'OM for the Saudi Al-Qadsiah.
