Defense, what defense? West Ham score three goals past Mandy for a thrilling derby victory over Chelsea

Reading Time: 3min | Sat. 04.12.21. | 16:36

The Hammers were trailing twice against the Blues but managed to win

As we said before, West Ham fans hate Millwall, but when they can't play them, Chelsea will do just as well. What a fantastic game, what a result for the Hammers! They played against the leader of the Premier League, a current Champions league winner and a team which defeated them twice last season, but still managed to turn the score over and win the match, scoring three goals along the way: West Ham – Chelsea 3-2.

The Blues have the second best defense in the league and had 8 clean sheets so far (along with City and Liverpool) but today they allowed three goals, and nearly allowed one or two more from David Moyes' team, who overcame 0-1, and 1-2 score and took all three points to climb to fourth place. It was one of those derby matches which are a joy to watch. Total commitment was seen from both teams, there was a lot of running, aggression, pressure, chances and what's more important, goals, five of them. It doesn't mean however that the players were concentrated, because if they did, there would be three goals less.

The game was a bit strange, as home team's leading scorer was poor in defense, and visitors captain made a rookie mistake which lead to first two goals of the match. It was Thiago Silva who jumped over sleepy Antonio and took the lead in the 28th minute, before European champion and captain Jorginho made a silly mistake and headed the ball back to keeper Mandy, who faced the pressure from West Ham attackers and forced a penalty. But a wonder goal from Mason Mount, who took the opportunity as he was completely alone allowed Chelsea to take the lead again, just before the break.

Without Kante in midfield, West Ham took command in the second half and played more aggressive and also increased the number of players in the final third which soon gave results: Jarod Bowen scored another beauty (after Mount's volley) for the equalizer: The London stadium erupted. Bowen missed another great opportunity but both clubs kind of settled after 2-2, as they knew that the next goal will decide the match. Still, the Hammers made final push and scored a total fluke for the winner. Masuaku had the ball and basically didn't know what to do with it, since nobody was open. He tried the shot and somehow the ball tricked Mandy and went into the net for the win.
