Coast Stima defying the odds of financial constraints

Coast Stima are unsure of traveling for their away game against Mount Kenya United on Sunday.

Cash strapped Coast Stima have punched above their weight this season, sitting third on the National Super League log, threatening to break into the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) next season.

The team is at risk of being disbanded after their financers Kenya Power withdrew sponsorship from Western Stima, Coast Stima and Nairobi Stima.

Kenya Power terminated funding the trio citing low revenue returns and recently posted a loss before tax of Ksh. 7 billion for the financial year ended June 2020.

Coast Stima, head coach Hussein Madaga has opened up on the hardships the club has faced since he took over back after Paul Ogai left the club back in October.

“Ogai left the club because of the dire financial needs, I was elevated into the position as an interim and because I am from Mombasa I decided to give back to the team and take charge of the team.

“It is just because here the players are calling me the head coach, but I am just volunteering but when we get a sponsor I have no problem of continuing as the head coach because the players really motivate me because if I do not come for training they will also not come,” said Madaga.

The players at the club are hopeful that their fortunes will soon change and earn some motivation in their promotion charge to the top-tier league.

Stima are currently on a five-match unbeaten and are three points off the automatic promotion places that are currently being held by Talanta FC and Police FC.

Speaking after their barren draw against Kisumu All Stars, Madaga was uncertain about travelling for their Sunday match against Mount Kenya United who are also undergoing the same financial fate.

“Even getting transport money for the players to turn up for training is a challenge, that is why we have fewer players for a match day,” he explained. “We have our next assignment against Mt. Kenya on Sunday in Nairobi but we are not sure if we will be able to travel,” noted Madaga.

Stima have to step up their efforts with five of the teams in the chasing pack for promotions sitting a point below them with 19.
