The visitors shocked Diego Simeone's slot (2-0), which gives Real Madrid a chance to reduce the margin between the two teams in the title race
You couldn't expect that coming! A modest mid-table side Levante upset Atletico Madrid on their soil (0-2) on matchday 24 of the La Liga. Although Diego Simeone's slot created dozens of proper chances, Levante kept the clean sheet and provided Real Madrid with an opportunity to seize the margin between them and table-toppers and make the last part of the season more than interesting.
It was Levante with the first proper chance seven minutes into the game. A fast and furious counter-attack found Morales on the left flank, he stormed into the box, but his shot was deplorable and a few inches of the target. Luis Suarez responded with his left on the other end only to be denied by the visitors' keeper.
That same Morales, Levante's skipper, broke the deadlock half an hour into the game in a less probable chance than the above mentioned. After the cross from the left, Morales' shot hit not just one but two of Atletico's defenders making it impossible for Oblak to get a save.
Los Colchoneros rushed to equalise, but Suarez and a prodigious Joao Felix couldn't find a way to place the ball behind Levante's keeper. It was obvious that Simeone's outfit was struggling to impose their philosophy on the pitch with Levante's unbreakable defence from the very start. It fractured though, in the 60th minute. Atletico scored an equaliser, but the referee denied it because of the offensive foul on the goal-line. As the game was reaching the end, it was more obvious that Atletico will lose for the second time this season, even failing to enter the score-sheet just like in that 2-0 defeat against Real Madrid.
Lemar was, however, so close to saving his team in the stoppage time, but his powerful shot was saved by the man-of-the-match, Levante's keeper Cardenas, who stood in front of the woodwork in La Liga for just the second time. His counterpart Oblak tried to help his teammates late in the injury-time, went to the opponents' box, which gave visitors a chance to engage in the counter-attack and De Frutos netted easily from 30 yards out for an unexpected victory.
