Injury-hit defender rewarded with new contract as he targets a place in England’s 2026 World Cup squad
Chelsea captain Reece James has signed a new six-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.
The 26-year-old academy graduate made his senior debut in September 2019 and has since become one of the club's most important figures. According to reports first carried by The Athletic, the new deal maintains an incentive-based structure tied to both individual and team performance.
James is currently Chelsea's highest-paid player, earning around £250,000 a week.
His previous contract was due to expire in 2028, making his renewal a priority for the club's ownership group led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, who took over in 2022.
Despite several injury-hit seasons, James remains a key presence in the squad. He has started 19 of Chelsea's 26 Premier League matches this season and has made 225 appearances for the club overall.
During that time, he has collected major honours, including the UEFA Champions League in 2021, the UEFA Super Cup later that year, and the UEFA Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2025. He was appointed club captain three years ago.

Talks over the new contract are understood to have progressed quickly, with the defender encouraged by his recovery from a string of injuries that disrupted several campaigns. In December 2023, he underwent surgery to address a recurring hamstring problem.
On the pitch, James has continued to show his versatility, operating both as a full-back and in midfield when required. Off it, he has drawn praise for his growing leadership, particularly after early criticism during Enzo Maresca's tenure.
Looking ahead, James has set his sights on returning to the international stage in a major tournament, targeting a place in the England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after missing the previous two through injury.
He returned to England duty in early 2025, featuring in qualifiers against Albania and Latvia after a two-year absence. Although he later withdrew from the October friendlies against Wales and Latvia, he was back in November and played in England's 2-0 win over Serbia at Wembley.
