Camavinga’s same mistake against Arsenal

The Real defender also got the red card last year in almost the same situation

Eduardo Camavinga will be under heavy pressure the next time he puts on the shirt of Real Madrid. In just five days, Madrid will host Deportivo Alaves, and it’s hard to predict how the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium will react when they see the Frenchman again. He’s not the only one to blame for another UEFA Champions League elimination, but his late-game action in Munich has only one real explanation—lack of judgment. You could soften the wording, but the reality is that Camavinga made a poor decision, getting sent off after a second yellow card and making life much harder for his teammates. Shortly after, Bayern Munich scored twice and marched into the semifinals.

If this had been an isolated incident, some fans might have shown understanding. The problem is—he did the exact same thing last year, at the same stage of the competition. Back then, it was away to Arsenal FC in the first leg of the quarterfinals. The match was already decided, with Mikel Arteta’s team leading 3–0, when the former Stade Rennais FC player picked up a red card in stoppage time. Why? After a foul by Raul Asencio on Leandro Trossard, he kicked the ball away despite already being on a yellow. Immature. Childish. Or simply—careless. Camavinga clearly hasn’t learned the lesson. If the same mistake happens twice within a year, at the same stage, then the club has to start asking serious questions—especially with a contract running until 2029. At least when it comes to the biggest matches.

Trying to shift the blame for elimination onto referee Slavko Vinčić only highlights a deeper issue—either weakness or an unwillingness to confront real problems. Beyond these incidents, Camavinga’s development has stagnated over the past two years. To be fair, coaches have often used him out of position—at left-back or even center-back—but the performances haven’t been convincing. Against RCD Mallorca—poor. Against Girona FC—not good enough. Against Bayern Munich—very bad.
