Sharks goalkeeper hoping to return to starting team

With the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) action beckoning, Kariobangi Sharks goalkeeper Brian Bwire is putting in a shift in a bid to reclaim his place in the starting team.

Before the league was halted, the unsettled Bwire had missed four consecutive league matches with his place taken by Brandon Obiero who certainly gave coach William Muluya a selection headache.

Obiero, a November catch from National Super League (NSL) side Coast Stima made good use of the playing time Muluya afforded him as he conceded a goal in the four matches.

Bwire who is understood to have missed the matches against Vihiga United, KCB, Posta Rangers and Mathare United after getting offers abroad has since committed his future to the Shield Cup holders by penning a four-year long contract renewal.

Besides chasing the European dream the former U20 captain was nursing a slight shoulder injury which saw him dropped out of the Stars team which was gearing up towards the final 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Togo and Egypt.

The Harambee Stars trialist said he was working his socks off to muscle out Obiero out of the goal posts ahead of the resumption of the league. Sharks are scheduled to host Kakamega Homeboyz in their opening match.

"I am working hard to regain the form I was riding on before March. I have recovered from the shoulder setback and I am ready to give the best for my team. I understand there is competition from the other goalkeepers which I believe pushes us to be on top of our game, " he said.

Bwire who joined Sharks in 2018 from Kakamega High School showed Obiero with praises for raising the bar higher for the time he was unavailable.

" He punched above his weight considering that he had not played in the top flight before. He helped the team register positive results in the matches he played," he added.
