Bitter Mourinho aims dig at Real (or) Inter

Reading Time: 2min | Fri. 23.01.26. | 15:15

Maybe he was taking shots on the club's inexperienced coaches, as he did not specify what he meant

Defeat to Juventus has put Benfica in a difficult, almost hopeless situation, with just six points after seven Champions League matches. The Lisbon side are far from the cutoff line for a place in the Top 24, and if they want to have any hope at all, they will have to beat none other than Real Madrid in the final round of the league phase. And as if Jose Mourinho’s clash with his former club were not intriguing enough on its own, the Portuguese coach fired a poisonous arrow a week before the meeting with the Madrid side—one that could be taken personally at the Santiago Bernabeu, given that the Special One did not specify who it was aimed at.

After the defeat to Juventus, Mourinho analyzed the situation on the benches of Europe’s biggest clubs and admitted that he was surprised by the number of coaches who had reached their current jobs without prior success in smaller environments.

“It's a real surprise. It surprises me that the best clubs in the world are managed by coaches with no history. On the other hand, when I think of Allegri at Milan, Gasperini at Roma, or Spalletti at Juve, it never surprises me" said The Special one.

However, he was not completely open about who exactly he had in mind. There are currently plenty of such examples in world football: from Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, Vincent Kompany at Bayern, Liam Rosenior at Chelsea, his predecessor Enzo Maresca as well, all the way to Cristian Chivu and Alvaro Arbeloa, coaches of his former clubs. And given that his next Champions League match is against Real Madrid, many interpreted his statement as a poisonous jab at Arbeloa, whom he coached in the early part of the previous decade in Madrid.

"Before, it was believed that whoever won the most was the best, but that's no longer the case. Now, whoever creates the best perceptions is the best. There are coaches who try things that don't work and fail, but they say, 'I died for my idea.' If you die for your idea, you're a fool" also added Mourinho.
