The legendary Argentine and Cristiano Ronaldo are now the only players to have surpassed the 900-goal mark
It all seemed to be unfolding exactly as planned. After choosing to rest key players in the weekend draw in Charlotte, Inter Miami CF arrived in Nashville sharp and in control. Lionel Messi delivered once again, calmly scoring what proved to be the 900th goal of his remarkable career. At that stage, the match felt firmly in Miami’s hands.
But football can turn in an instant. Nashville SC needed just one moment to flip the script—and they found it. The equalizer not only stunned Miami but ultimately ended their journey in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Cristian Espinoza struck in the 74th minute, wiping out Messi’s opener and sealing a 1-1 draw. Combined with the goalless first leg, it was Nashville who advanced, leaving a bitter taste for the Inter. For much of the match, Miami dictated the tempo, though their rhythm was disrupted early by an injury to Sergio Reguilon.
Messi’s goal had come in signature fashion—quick feet in a crowded box, defenders left off balance, and a precise finish. It looked decisive. Until it wasn’t. When chaos broke out in Miami’s penalty area, Espinoza reacted quickest, smashing home after Dayne St. Clair could only parry the initial effort. Miami’s defenders were left scrambling, helpless as the ball flew past them.
There was no late twist this time. No dramatic rescue from Messi, no second chance for Miami. Their hopes of conquering North America this season came to an abrupt end on home soil, undone by a lack of cutting edge when it mattered most.
Yet even in defeat, Messi’s story continues to stand apart. Since arriving in Miami in 2023, he has transformed the club, scoring 81 goals in just 92 appearances and leading them to both the League Cup and MLS Cup.

His greatness, however, was forged long before MLS. At Barcelona, he became a global icon, beginning with a goal as a teenager against Albacete Balompie shortly after replacing Samuel Eto'o. That moment sparked a legendary run—672 goals, countless trophies, and an era of dominance.
A later chapter at Paris Saint-Germain saw him continue to deliver alongside Neymar Jr and Kylian Mbappe, before his move to Miami, a club co-owned by David Beckham.
With Argentina national football team, he has added further weight to his legacy—196 appearances, 115 goals, and a World Cup triumph.

Now, with 900 career goals, Messi stands alongside Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players in history to reach such heights. Ronaldo, who hit the milestone in 2024 against the Croatia national football team, has since pushed even further, but the two icons remain alone at the summit—separated from the rest of the footballing world by numbers that may never be matched.
