One of the greatest footballers of all time spoke about a possible appearance at next year’s World Cup

Leo Messi, fresh off signing a contract extension with Inter Miami in MLS, has once again stirred excitement among football fans by expressing his desire to represent Argentina at the 2026 World Cup — provided his body holds up. In a conversation with NBC NewsTom Llamas, the 38-year-old legend was asked directly about his future with the national team, and he didn’t hesitate to respond.

"It's extraordinary to be able to be at a World Cup, and I'd love to be there. I want to feel good and be a key player in helping my national team, if I make it. And I'm going to evaluate it day by day when I start preseason with Inter Miami and see if I can really be at 100%," shared the former Barcelona and PSG star.

Once again, Messi reaffirmed his deep bond with the Albiceleste colors. "I'm really looking forward to it because it's a World Cup... We're coming off a win in the last World Cup, and being able to defend it again on the pitch is spectacular, because it's always a dream to play for the national team, especially in official competitions, so I hope God allows me to do it again," said the Rosario-born icon, who will be 39 when the 2026 tournament — set for June 11 to July 19 — kicks off.

As for his decision to stay in Miami until 2028, the year he’ll turn 41, Messi explained that it came naturally. "I've always said that I base my decision on how I feel day to day, physically and mentally, to continue playing and continue being part of this club. And, honestly, I felt very good during the year. I'm happy living in Miami, as is my family, and, honestly, the decision was easy."
