Amorim after losing: We can beat anyone?!
Reading Time: 3min | Mon. 18.08.25. | 10:41
Unlike United's coach, former captain Keane was not so optimistic
Manchester United started the season with a revamped front line and a proper pre-season under Ruben Amorim and it showed. The Red Devils were far more aggressive and quicker as they were last season, and even players like De Ligt and Mason Mount looked good. But the biggest difference was in attack, where Cunha and Mbeumo were a real threat and caused havoc in the penalty area. Finally the scouting work did a good job and got the right players. They overpaid them as well, but at least they are great footballers, unlike Sancho or Antony, who cost even more and showed nothing. After their performance against Arsenal, and without any European football, it seems that both Hojlund and Zirkzee will spend the vast majority of the season on the bench.
15 - Ruben Amorim has now lost 15 of his 28 Premier League games (W7 D6) – this is the fastest a manager has reached 15 defeats in the competition, without taking charge of a newly promoted team in that period, since Paul Hart with Portsmouth in 2009 (27 games). The Red Devils dominated the much more experienced Arsenal, but still lost 1-0 after all this talk of a good performance. But somehow, Ruben Amorim didn’t see it like that and said after the game that this Manchester ‘can beat anybody’?!
“We proved that we can win any game in the Premier League, especially against a great team like Arsenal. We were the better team. It’s our feeling that we played better. In the end, we lose the game, but I’m really proud of the effort they put in” he said after the match.
How come he proved that he can win when he lost (again) is anybody’s guess but former United’s captain Roy Keane was not so happy and optimistic.
“Overall, I think the game was poor second-half, the expectations at Man United are so low that everyone's comfortable with a 1-0 defeat. It does worry me that, couple of the new signings, there's a bit of encouragement with that, they get you up the pitch, results will improve - it's always tough against Arsenal. But it's another defeat, no goals. There's still that worry, I had it before the match, what we saw, but you never felt like United had two or three goals in them. Talk about not being boring, you've got to score otherwise you're constantly under pressure. The first thing that comes to mind about United in the last 20 to 30 years is the goalscorers, they've brought a couple through the door but I don't see it with the other group" said Keane.
