The 19-year-old signed for the LaLiga outfit in July on a free transfer, putting pen to paper on a four-year deal that began with joining the youth side, Celta Fortuna.
Coincidentally, McCarthy also turned out for the Spanish club between 1999 to 2003 during his playing career and therefore, from experience, reserved some nuggets of wisdom for Kibet to aid him in his adaptation at the club.
Speaking on the sidelines of Harambee Stars' open media training session on Tuesday, 11 November at the Nyayo National Stadium, Kibet opened up on the advice he received from McCarthy.
“He told me that I first need to learn Spanish because once I learn the language, it will be easier to communicate and to understand what the coaches and teammates need from me.
I am currently working on it as Celta have enrolled all the players who can't speak Spanish in a Spanish class,” said Kibet.
Four months since he joined the Vigo-based outfit, the St. Antony Boys, Kitale alumnus revealed what he has been able to develop in his game.
“I have started more on the technical part; understanding the game and knowing what I am supposed to do at different moments, and that is what I have been working on, as it is what I need to improve in my game currently,” he remarked.
Kibet, who received his maiden call-up to the senior national team, also took time to speak on his inclusion in the squad.
“I am excited beyond belief. I did not expect it to come this soon. My goal was to break into the team by 2027, and so for it to come two years earlier is a great feeling.”
Harambee Stars will fly to Turkey for two international friendly matches against Equatorial Guinea and Senegal on Friday, 14 November and Tuesday, 18 November, respectively, where Kibet will be hoping to make his debut.
