Chepkoech is reported to have accepted the sanction, but AIU is yet to announce the same

Zurich Marathon, Sevilla reigning silver medalist Josephine Chepkoech has been stripped off her medal for a positive doping test, the event organisers have confirmed.

Chepkoech came home second in this year’s race on 18 February, in a personal best (PB) time of 2:22:38, while Kenyan compatriot Magdalyne Masai was third in 2:22:51. Azmera Gebru Hagos won the race in 2:22:13.

“Today, Thursday, May 23, we have proceeded to eliminate Josephine Chepkoech from the Zurich Marathon of Seville classification, who finished the test in second place and who has accepted the sanction imposed by Athletics Integrity Unit after her positive anti-doping test,” the stament by race organisers on social media reads.

Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) notified Chepkoech of her provisional suspension on 8 May after testing positive for the presence of testosterone metabolites, one of the prohibited substances included in the World Anti-Doping Code, specifically in articles 2.1 and 2.2.

Chepkoech accepted the sanction after her positive test leading to the disqualification of her results, Masai moving second while Derartu Hailu competes the podium.

The 35-year-old Chepkoech, who was awarded a prize of 7,500 euros (Ksh 1,075,605) for her second place finish, made her marathon debut at the Nairobi Marathon in 2018, winning the race in 2:33:11, and also finished second at the Barcelona Marathon a year later in 2019 in 2:25:26.
