Yegon leads Kenyan sweep as Tanui is beaten in Argentina

Tanui clocked 2:28:58 for second place as compatriot Caroline Jepchirchir came home in 2:30:26 to complete the podium places.

Bethwel Yegon clocked 2:09:04 at the 2024 Buenos Aires International Marathon, to win the men’s race, leading a Kenyan podium sweep in the Argentinian capital as Rodah Jepkorir Tanui settled to silver in the women’s race. 

The Berlin Marathon 2021 silver medalist finished ahead of Isaac Too who registered a personal best (PB) time of 2:09:18 for silver a perfect debut . Another Kenyan, Eliasa Kibet completed the podium places in 2:11:39. 

Yegon made his debut in the classic distance in Berlin, clocking 2:08:35. He returned to the race in 2021, running an awe-inspiring second half of the marathon to win silver. 

At the race's half distance, Yegon had been 82 seconds behind the leading group. He caught up to 17 seconds behind after 35 kilometres of the race, before overtaking Kenenisa Bekele who had been favourite ahead of the race. 

Meanwhile, the women's race saw defending champion Jepkorir Tanui beaten to her own game as she was denied another trophy by Ethiopia’s Yenenesh Tilahun Dinkesa who clocked 2:27:15 for the win. 

Jepkorir Tanui clocked 2:28:58 for second place as compatriot Caroline Jepchirchir came home in 2:30:26 to complete the podium places.
