The Kenya Mixed Relay team not only defended gold in Belgrade, they nailed it perfectly. From start to finish, they were leading the race and increased the lead at every exchange point. And when Birri Abera had an accident with her shoe and had to run without it in the last round, that only increased the difference in the final result: Kenya 22:15 - Ethiopia 22:43.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport Kenya from Belgrade, the Kenya team emphasised the importance of having a strong group which felt extreme confidence in each other.
“We have a strong team so we felt confident from the start. At the start, everybody came strong so we had to push up a bit” said Reynold Kipkorir Cheruiyot, who ran first and created a sizable gap between the Ethiopia competitor.

Virginia Nyambura took over from Cheruiyot and said she felt very confident at that point, emphasising the quality of the Kenyan team, which gave her additional calmness in the second round. Purity Chepkirui was the last athlete and the one who had to finish the race, but looking at Munguti’s great run, she was calm and confident.
“When I saw my friend Kyumbe coming so strong and in the first place, I was confident. I saw the gap, it was bid and I’m happy that I just managed to keep the pace strong and finish the race. I’m looking forwards to the Olympics 2024” she said.
